about
Highlands began after a chance visit to Navesink, NJ where two twin lighthouse loom out over the horizon. These lighthouses protected sea-born travelers from the jagged coastlines, shifting sands and other perils that could damage and sink a ship. The views are stunning.
I remember the sun shining so brightly and being completely immersed in the history while the weather overtook my senses.
After returning to Jaffa in Israel where I had been living, the song came forth and after nearly ten years of performing the song, this recording captures so many memories for me.
Two members of my band from Israel accompany the track, Jason Reich and Tamar Amoyal. Other instrumentation comes from Ross Bellenoit and Josh Gelles. The background vocals are from none other than Blair Bodine. The track was recorded in 2018 at Turtle Studios and finished in 2022.
lyrics
From the bay, I have seen the Highlands
The Hudson and the Narrows seen across
From below, you saw her eye all the passing the ships
The echo of her light down below
Travelers’ eyes climb the Hill for a hold on hope
Stake a stake for the wanderer to hold
The bond for the vagabond to keep and repeat
Her eyes on you and nothing could go wrong
We’d go high, high we’d go to home
Her light shines down on to the harbor
Right there, stare into her eyes
Wide awake in the evening light, knew she’d done me right
But when Morning comes, I walk away alone, alone
Now, catch her seeing off into the distance
Something now is gone where once was found
Her eyes are shut, she sleeps at night, she dreams days of old
Now we’re turning page, her story being told, being told, being told
